Tokyo’s Metaplanet has made waves again, grabbing 555 BTC worth $53.4 million to beef up its crypto reserves. Announced today, this purchase boosts the firm’s total holdings to 5,555 BTC, valued at roughly $481.5 million.

Metaplanet Maintains BTC Purchasing Streak

Metaplanet pulled off this purchase by buying 555 BTC at an average price of $96,134 per coin. The funds came from smart financial moves, like issuing bonds and selling stock rights, a tactic the firm has mastered to fuel its Bitcoin buys. Since kicking off its Bitcoin strategy in April 2024, Metaplanet has been on a tear, consistently adding to its stockpile.

Just last month, on April 24, 2025, it snagged 145 BTC, pushing past the 5,000 BTC mark. The firm’s “BTC Yield,” a measure of Bitcoin growth per share, jumped 136.7% this year, showing its knack for stacking coins.

The firm also issued $25 million in 0% interest bonds in preparation for a future Bitcoin buy, which follows its strategy to make the virtual asset its primary treasury reserve asset, as announced today. The bonds, detailed in a regulatory filing, are sold to EVO FUND, mature on October 31, 2025, and align with Metaplanet’s goal to accumulate 21,000 BTC by 2026, having already acquired 5,555 BTC by this date.

Metaplanet Ventures Wide

Metaplanet’s game plan stands out because it is open about its Bitcoin bets and uses unique metrics like BTC Yield to show shareholders the payoff. Unlike most companies, it treats Bitcoin like a key piece of its financial puzzle, a move inspired by MicroStrategy, which holds a massive 538,200 BTC.

Metaplanet’s new U.S. branch in Florida, set to raise $250 million, gives it an edge in tapping global markets.

Other firms are jumping on the Bitcoin train, too. For example, Strategy recently added 6,556 BTC for $555.8 million.

An American-based health care company, Semler Scientific, also adopted a strategic BTC reserve and occasionally purchases the apex coin from the open market. On the same day of Strategy’s latest purchase, Semler added about 167 BTC, worth $16.2 million, to its portfolio. It now holds 3,634 BTC.
